2008 Asda Syrah Vin de Pays d’Oc

25 Aug

The suspiciously cheap price of £3.37 from Asda (different label-I suspect they change them annually. Well worth joining MySupermarket if you do your grocery shopping online), coupled with the fact I’d not tried a Syrah before made this too tempting to pass up.

I left it open for a while and tried to ignore my Read the rest of this entry »

Tesco Chilean Merlot

18 Aug

This red wine was £3.69 from Tesco. I was actually quite pleased with this addition to the wine rack.

Tesco Chilean Merlot

Aromas of blackberry with a touch of cherry and perhaps some chocolate. The taste was pretty similar, slightly drying with a little raspberry in there. Had some depth to it too. For a cheap wine, I’d certainly buy it again.

2007 Gabbiano Chianti

18 Aug

Not sure where this red wine came from, but it will most likely be Tesco or Asda at about £4 a bottle.

2007 Gabbiano Chianti

When I opened the bottle the cork was rather vinegary and I was a bit concerned that was how the wine was going to be. Fortunately it wasn’t, but it didn’t stand out in any way really. Drinkable, but little to recommend it over others in the price range.

Marchesini Vitis Pinot Noir

18 Aug

Bought on offer at Tesco for £3.99.

Bought this for a change from the merlot we normally drink, as at one point I was partial to a bit of Burgundy. It appears my tastes have moved on since then! Read the rest of this entry »

Hardy’s Merlot Varietal Range 2009

26 Jul

This was £4 from Asda and I think that was a discounted price. Also available at £4.11 from Tesco. At 13% it was very easy drinking.

It had quite a spirity smell-I don’t mean alcohol, I mean strongly scented like Read the rest of this entry »

2009 Fragoso Merlot

23 Jul

This was a birthday gift my girlfriend received. It’s Argentinian, 13.5% and appears to be from Marks & Spencer.

I got rich berry smells; some Read the rest of this entry »

2007 River Route Merlot

20 Jul

I couldn’t remember buying this cheap red wine but I suspected it came from Asda so I looked it up. Turns out it was £3.98, 13% ABV and Romanian.

I must admit I wasn’t particularly impressed by this. It had that raw grape taste in the same vein as that filth Domaine Boyar, but not quite so bad. Nothing really to recommend it. Save your cash.

The wine glass

15 Jul

Having discovered the enjoyment of merlot in the recent months, this article on the Russian Cigar Clan magazine website caught my attention. My good lady had given me a Glencairn whisky glass for Christmas and that made it plainly obvious how important the choice of glass is.

I recently got chatting with a friend who sold glassware and ceramics to the catering industry in his previous job and I mentioned this article. It turns out he’d visited the Riedel factory in Bavaria and was well versed in the theory behind glass design.

Later on, he gave a remarkable demonstration of the difference. Read the rest of this entry »

Evening wines

08 May

Just a quick mention on these as I had guests round so couldn’t really do a proper taste test. That said, I’ve had them both before and will have them again because I enjoy them.

First up was the 2008 Chevalier de Fauvers Merlot Vin de Pays d’Oc, which is £3.99 a bottle from Lidl. I’d chosen it because of the deeper dent at the bottom of the bottle as I’d heard that the depth seems to correlate with the quality. Whether this is true or not, it seems to have paid off in this case.
