This was £4 from Asda and I think that was a discounted price. Also available at £4.11 from Tesco. At 13% it was very easy drinking.

This was a birthday gift my girlfriend received. It’s Argentinian, 13.5% and appears to be from Marks & Spencer.
I got rich berry smells; some Read the rest of this entry »
I couldn’t remember buying this cheap red wine but I suspected it came from Asda so I looked it up. Turns out it was £3.98, 13% ABV and Romanian.
I must admit I wasn’t particularly impressed by this. It had that raw grape taste in the same vein as that filth Domaine Boyar, but not quite so bad. Nothing really to recommend it. Save your cash.

We had this as part of Tesco’s Finest meal deal where you get a main, a side, a dessert and a bottle of wine for £9. Bargain! This was the red option:

Just a quick mention on these as I had guests round so couldn’t really do a proper taste test. That said, I’ve had them both before and will have them again because I enjoy them.
First up was the 2008 Chevalier de Fauvers Merlot Vin de Pays d’Oc, which is £3.99 a bottle from Lidl. I’d chosen it because of the deeper dent at the bottom of the bottle as I’d heard that the depth seems to correlate with the quality. Whether this is true or not, it seems to have paid off in this case.
About 4 quid from Tesco I think. I believe it’s this bottle at £4.29 and they’ve changed the label.
Unusually for the red wines I’ve bought off the shelf in the UK, Read the rest of this entry »
Continuing my new series on cheap booze, this 2008 Veneto Merlot, a £3.99 Italian from Tesco was a marked improvement.
Smelt like your bog standard merlot. A little Read the rest of this entry »
Welcome to a new section in my blog! I’ve decided to start doing little reviews on cheap red wine (and maybe some whites) as I’m starting to discover that some of it is quite palatable. I will point out that I have no idea what I am talking about and know very little about wine. I thought I’d start with this, mainly as a warning that you can go TOO cheap with a bottle of wine.
This particular bottle was a grand total of £1.83 from Tesco. I bought it Read the rest of this entry »
