H. Upmann Petit Corona

22 Mar

Smoked 2 March 2011. Bought as a single from the ‘Bear Shop’ in Cardiff, UK. In humi since 30 November 2010.

Despite choosing this one for a special occasion, yet again I was disappointed. The papery harshness characteristic of a cigar that needs more time in the humidor was pretty much the only thing I could notice. Very annoying.

It’s just difficult to know how much rest they need when you buy cigars as singles. Could be a brand new box, or it could have sat there for years. I must admit it really discourages me from buying singles unless I know what box it’s come from.

Por Larranaga Petit Corona

22 Mar

Smoked 20 February 2011. Box code EMA OCT 07; in humidor since 28 November 2009.

Smoked this while driving back from a wedding. While some of these are amazing, some of them are bitter and not particularly pleasant. This was one of the latter. I have tried to find a way of picking out which are which, generally believing the softer, slightly looser ones to not be the bitter ones but even that isn’t consistent!

If anyone has any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong, please comment below.

Jose L. Piedra Petit Cazadore

17 Mar

Smoked19 February 2011. Box code AUS MAR 10; in humidor since 30 August 2010.

I smoked this in the evening after a couple of friends got married. Admittedly I’d had a fair bit of wine but this was very enjoyable. The second from this packet and they’ve definitely improved since the first time I smoked one of these (JLP Petit Cazadore). Typical raisin and prune flavours with a bit of treacle going on too.

If you can get these when you’re in Spain (where they sell for approximately 1 Euro each) they are stupendous value for money. Much much better than the Partagas Chicos at a similar price. Whether the thicker ring gauge is responsible for this I don’t know. Get some if you see them!

El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme

13 Mar

Smoked 19 February 2011. Box code ASE MAY 09; in humidor since 1 march 2010.

It was rather early in the morning (09:00) to be smoking anything too strong so I went for this. It may have been lower on the nicotine but that didn’t mean it was a lightweight with regards to taste!

Very rich leather with cedar coming in about halfway through. I’m surprised I actually noticed the cedar, as even sniffing the Spanish cedar inserts in tubos before I’ve never really got much of an aroma. It was strongly noticeable this time, and definitely Spanish cedar. Probably a bit strongly flavoured to my taste for the morning but I suspect that will calm down after a few years giving more complexity. If not, they’ll just be a cigar for later on!

Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto

09 Feb

Smoked 5 February 2011. Box code GEA OCT 08; in humidor since 23 September 2009.

Only a short review this time as I was with company when I smoked this. I’ll concentrate on one soon, I promise! This no longer had the bite that they first had when I got them. It hasn’t developed into a deeper flavour yet but it was still a very enjoyable smoke. It did seem slightly over humidified though that may have simply been the environment I was in.

Bolivar Royal Corona

20 Jan

Smoked 14 January 2011. Box code TEB MAY 08, in humi since 29 May 2009. Accompanied by Southern Comfort.

Apologies for the picture quality but this was taken with my mobile phone.

The pre-light smell was slightly sour but not particularly strong. This always surprises Read the rest of this entry »

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Depute

14 Jan

Smoked 8 January 2011. Box code OPM OCT 09, in humidor since 3 February 2010.

Just a quick note here as I didn’t concentrate too much on this. Was out with a group of friends who I do outdoor stuff with and we went to a pub just outside the city centre for drinks later on. Despite being rather chilly there was only space outside for most of the evening so I took advantage and had a Depute.

I consider this a good pub cigar as it’s small enough to not look quite so ostentatious in public. Despite that, it was commented on that it was an unusual sight. Regarding the actual cigar, I must try and leave these alone at least until 2012. I keep saying this about various cigars so I need to actually remember! Looking at the related posts, I’ve wasted too many of these already.

Jose L. Piedra Petit Cazadores

06 Jan

Smoked 31 December 2010. Age unknown.

A couple of friends had recently been to Spain and one of them seems to have become quite taken with a good cigar over the last year. I would like to think I had some influence in that but ironically enough it was they who introduced ME to cigar smoking!

Being New Years Eve my friend had brought along a 5-pack of Jose L. Piedra Petit Cazadores Cuban cigars with Read the rest of this entry »

Rafael Gonzalez Petit Corona

31 Dec

Smoked 4 December 2010. Box code SEM NOV 08; in humidor since 28 June 2010.

Tragically, it’s been some time since I’ve had the opportunity to smoke a cigar due to the cold weather and simply not having the opportunity. My social life gets rather hectic in December hence it taking me nearly a month to getting round to publishing this! I’d chosen this as I was under the impression it had been a while since I’d had one and like to smoke the Cuban cigars I have more of, to try and even out my selection. Really I should smoke the ones I have less of, as they will either have more age on them or will be singles which could introduce me to an as yet unknown delight. I’ll learn eventually…

Anyway, this Read the rest of this entry »

Vegas Robaina Famoso

25 Nov

Smoked 21 November 2010. Box code LPM ABR 08; in humi since 20 January 2010.

Considering at one point these were so bad I suspected they were fakes, this was by far the best yet. Having had little experience of Vegas Robaina, I found it difficult to tell whether they were the real deal or not. I sent a couple to a friend on UKCF who Read the rest of this entry »
