Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto

08 May

Smoked 1 May 2011. Box code GEA OCT 08. Been in humidor since 23 September 2009.

Going on my previous drunken experience with one of these, I thought it worthwhile investigating this batch again. I’m so glad I did! This was absolutely beautiful. Completely reminded me why I’d bought them in the first place.

I smoked this slowly so as not to overheat it, and because I was trying to make it last for as much of a 100-mile car journey as possible. It’s a real pity I didn’t have a can of Canada Dry in the car with me as I find this works well to bring out the subtleties of the Hoyo Petit Robusto. Must not run out of these.

Oxford cigars

30 Apr

Smoked 16 April 2010 on the way to and in Oxford for a night out with friends.

First up was a Por Larranaga Montecarlo (box code OPM AGO 09;  in humidor since 8 May 2010) for the drive. The sizing may look a little effeminate but I think these are an absolute delight! Much better value than the Por Larranaga Petit Corona, as I’ve found those to be too inconsistent for my liking. The Montecarlo gives me the taste that I believe to be typical for the marca, with perhaps a more floral hint than the Petit Corona.

MUCH later on that day evening, I shared (heresy, I know…) a Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto (box code GEA OCT 08; in humidor since 23 September 2009) with one of my accomplices. Whether it was the insanely hot burrito I ate at around 7pm or the inordinate quantities of flat lager I had consumed, there was definitely something lacking in this cigar. I suspect smoking another very soon to check might be in order!

Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto

09 Feb

Smoked 5 February 2011. Box code GEA OCT 08; in humidor since 23 September 2009.

Only a short review this time as I was with company when I smoked this. I’ll concentrate on one soon, I promise! This no longer had the bite that they first had when I got them. It hasn’t developed into a deeper flavour yet but it was still a very enjoyable smoke. It did seem slightly over humidified though that may have simply been the environment I was in.

Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto

14 Sep

Smoked 11 September 2010. Box code was GEA OCT 08; in humidor since 23 September 2009.

I smoked this at my brother’s wedding. I took a few other cigars with me but I didn’t really have the opportunity to enjoy anything substantial. There was a reason I chose the Hoyo Petit Robusto. My Uncle used to smoke cigars about six years ago, but as he’d mentioned the word Hamlet in the past, Read the rest of this entry »
